Monthly Spotlight August 2023: The Rare Impact Fund

By Michelle Lunger

For the August spotlight we chose to highlight the Rare Impact Fund. The Rare Impact fund is a “fiscally sponsored project” of the Hopewell Fund, a 501(c)(3) public charity. It was founded by fellow mental health advocate Selena Gomez and was inspired by her personal journey with mental health. “The Rare Impact Fund is committed to expanding access to mental health services and education for young people everywhere. We work with a strong network of supporters and experts to bring mental health resources into educational settings that reach young people. Because no one regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, or background- should struggle alone.” The Rare Impact Fund is on their way to raising $100 million and plans to do so over the next 10 years to expand access to mental health services and education for young people around the world. To make this happen, they “collaborate with a network of grantees, donors, and community to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and provide young people with access to the resources they need to support their mental health.” You can access the free mental health content and resources made by these collaborations through their social media accounts, website, and events (see below). In addition to the amazing work they are already doing to fundraise,  through like-minded foundations, partners, and community, 1% of all Rare Beauty sales are donated directly to the Rare Beauty Fund. The Rare Impact Fund ultimately seeks to raise awareness and destigmatize mental health, create resources and services to benefit the mental health of young people, and increase access to mental health services especially in educational settings. Their priority areas include- social and emotional education, communities of practice and practitioner support and resources- including communities and practitioners serving the BIPOC community, and suicide prevention and crisis support.

Their impact thus far:

Post their 2020 launch, the Rare Impact Fund has already raised approximately $6 million in contributions while distributing over $3 million in grant support to organizations not only nationally, but worldwide. This money is directly benefiting and expanding mental health accessibility, resources, and education to young people around the world.
