Monthly Spotlight May 2023: Break The Hold (BTH)

By Michelle Lunger

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! In honor of this month, we chose to highlight an organization that prioritizes mental wellness and provides education about suicide prevention called Break The Hold (BTH). BTH was formed following the loss of Brian T. Halloran, a “beloved son, brother, family member, friend, teammate, and member of a community in Pleasantville, NY” on January 23, 2018. Today, BTH’s main mission is to aid in suicide prevention. To do this, they teach about resilience and how to reduce the risk of suicide through “education, advocacy and raised awareness about depression and mental health challenges.” To make this possible, BTH provides resources and educational programming on mental wellness to schools, parents, educators, community members, and more throughout Westchester and neighboring communities. Their program is focused on teaching “Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which is evidence-based training for emotional regulation. DBT uses mindfulness strategies to manage emotions, increasing a person's tolerance to negative emotions.” In addition to their programming, BTH is committed to helping communities be better informed about suicide, the risks and warning signs, along with who is potentially at risk, and empowering young people to open up the dialogue for mental health. Just like BTH, we at RTW are committed to “breaking the hold” on mental illness and providing suicide prevention awareness. Join us as we support Break the Hold on their journey to do this. Stay tuned if you liked this blog post and are interested in learning more about DBT this month. And lastly, happy Mental Health Awareness Month! Don’t forget to make your mental health a priority.
